Why We're Called SandHogWorks In 1872, crews climbed down into pressurized chambers sunk under the East River and dug out the riverbed by hand — so the Brooklyn Bridge would have something to stand on. They were called sandhogs, named for the sandy river bottom they were moving through. Nobody handed them solid ground. They started in loose soil, groundwater seeping in from every direction, and they dug until they hit bedrock. Only then could they build something that would hold.

They never stopped there either. Sandhogs sank the caissons under the Brooklyn Bridge, dug the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, built the subways that move millions of people every day, and cut the water tunnels that still deliver water to the city around the clock. Nobody sees a foot of it. You turn on a tap and the water's there. That's the whole point — the work only counts when you never have to think about it.

That stuck with us.
